Tips to Diet while Dining Out

  • Check online nutrition information for restaurants before arriving.
  • Don’t leave home hungry…eat a piece of fruit or some vegetables before dinner.
  • Split a normal sized entree.
  • Avoid the buffet, especially if you struggle with portion control.
  • Ask how a dish is prepared and don’t be afraid to change your mind.
  • Ask for the soup of the day if it is broth based.
  • Order shrimp cocktail and resist the plethora of fried appetizers.
  • Be wise when ordering a salad…ask for no croutons or cheese, and order a low fat dressing on the side.
  • Eat healthy even during special gatherings…distract yourself from the food table
  • Request that the bread basket not be served.
  • Take half of your food to go and save calories.
  • Be prepared to send your food back if it not prepared healthily or how you asked.
  • Drink water or unsweet tea instead of sodas or alcohol.
  • Always ask for dressing on the side, and dip your fork in the dressing rather than slather it on the salad. Choose low fat or fat free.
  • Order fruit for dessert instead of calorie-laden choices.
