Tips to Diet while Dining Out
- Check online nutrition information for restaurants before arriving.
- Don’t leave home hungry…eat a piece of fruit or some vegetables before dinner.
- Split a normal sized entree.
- Avoid the buffet, especially if you struggle with portion control.
- Ask how a dish is prepared and don’t be afraid to change your mind.
- Ask for the soup of the day if it is broth based.
- Order shrimp cocktail and resist the plethora of fried appetizers.
- Be wise when ordering a salad…ask for no croutons or cheese, and order a low fat dressing on the side.
- Eat healthy even during special gatherings…distract yourself from the food table
- Request that the bread basket not be served.
- Take half of your food to go and save calories.
- Be prepared to send your food back if it not prepared healthily or how you asked.
- Drink water or unsweet tea instead of sodas or alcohol.
- Always ask for dressing on the side, and dip your fork in the dressing rather than slather it on the salad. Choose low fat or fat free.
- Order fruit for dessert instead of calorie-laden choices.
